Narrowing the design to 12 MHz of bandwidth lets it hold a cleaner match and slightly different element tuning suited to equipment that works specifically in the 223 MHz region, while the SMA fitting and lighter build point it toward compact and portable systems rather than heavy fixed stations.

Performance

The five elements provide 8 dBi of forward gain with a 14 dB front-to-back ratio, a 58 degree vertical and 75 degree horizontal beamwidth. That slightly wider beam is forgiving to aim, which is helpful for temporary setups, hand-aimed direction finding and field links where precise alignment is impractical. Vertical or horizontal polarization is selected by mounting orientation, and the 50 ohm feed keeps it compatible with standard radios and analysers.
