Why October 1 is National Day
National Day marks the founding of the People’s Republic of China. On October 1, 1949, the new government was proclaimed in Beijing. The date has been observed each year as a national day ever since. The State Council’s historical timeline records the events of that day.
Today, the holiday is an occasion to spend time with family and friends. Public spaces across China often feature festive decorations, while many people use the break to travel, visit loved ones or simply rest.
