Magnetic-mount antenna SKU 832, in production since 2019
A 7 dBi magnetic-mount antenna on a Y30 neodymium base, 45 × 22 × 8 mm, holding 2,000 Gauss at the contact face. The customer has been reordering on the same SKU for six years.
Same magnet, same gain, on the same SKU
The customer builds vehicle and mobile-install kits that need a strong magnetic-mount antenna. They had already tooled the housing, so the magnet dimensions (45 × 22 × 8 mm) and the connector choice were not up for discussion. They needed 2,000 Gauss at the contact face and 7 dBi peak gain, with a price that survives a multi-year OEM program.
Six years on, we still ship the same SKU. The magnet batch is sourced from the same supplier, the matching network is unchanged, and the cost-down review happens once a year without touching the housing or the connector.
Build the magnet once and keep it that way
The magnet was the part most likely to drift. Cheap neodymium loses Gauss over time, and different batches from the same vendor can vary by 5–10% on contact strength. For a vehicle-mount antenna that the customer installs on a roof, a weak magnet means the antenna falls off at highway speed. Their cost of failure is not theoretical.
The housing was already tooled to 45 × 22 × 8 mm. There was no room for a different magnet grade or a thicker base without re-tooling on their side.
- Y30 neodymium, 45 × 22 × 8 mm — fixed by the existing customer housing
- 2,000 Gauss minimum at the magnet face
- 7 dBi peak gain on the operating band
- Multi-year OEM pricing — no surprise cost spikes
Lock the magnet source, freeze the matching network
We picked one Y30 supplier and one magnet part number. Every incoming batch is sample-tested at the contact face with a Gauss meter before it goes on the line. The whip and matching network were tuned once and have not changed since 2019, so the electrical performance does not shift between batches.
Cost reviews happen once a year. The savings come from sourcing and assembly steps that do not touch the housing, the connector, or the magnet grade. The customer does not have to re-qualify anything on their side.
- Single magnet supplier and part number since program start
- Batch test: 2,000 Gauss at contact face, every batch
- Whip and matching network frozen — no re-tuning between batches
- Annual cost review, savings kept on our side of the BOM
Six years in, still on the same SKU
